| i like canisters because they are the closet thing to a sump that you dont have to DIY. I would like to hook up a few sumps or wet/dry's but they are too much work and will not fit in where I have my tanks.
Sort of like you they are all over the house LOL

| I prefer HOB, since they are easier for me to do maintenance on. I have a bad back that prevents me from stooping for any period of time. | |

| I like the canister filters because of the amount of media that can be stuffed in them, but I use both HOB and Canisters on my 55, and 125. I still use UGF's in some of my tanks as well. I know lots of folks don't care for them but I've been using them sucsessfuly for many years now and well, if it aint brook, dont fix it!

| For me it depends entirely on the situation. I have sponge filters going, hob, canisters and custom made oddballs.
Sponge filters - for small tanks, or delicate things that don't like current. HOBs - for the small/medium tanks since I have bunches of 'em. Canisters - are usually for tanks 55g+ thought that depends on stocking.
For the livestock tubs and ponds I use customized pond filters or have built my own. Most of them are entirely submerged except for the return, which is usually to some sort of waterfall.
If I had to pick one style only I would go with canisters. Turtles and big cichlids seem to like to beat on the filter parts, and more than once I've had them kill a HOB by knocking off the intake and the motor grinds all night long.
With nearly all the canisters here, I've replaced the stock tubing, like the blue tubes on the Rena ones with half inch pond tubing and a clamped on guard. Haven't had anyone really knock anything off yet.

| I only use HOB's and sponge filters right now. For the price I like the Emperor HOB's. You can fit a good amount of media in them and they give you some options for different media as well.
I use the sponges for smaller tanks (20gal and under) and for fry or shrimp tanks so they don't get sucked up in filter intakes.

| I chose HOB but honestly I like different choices for different situations...I only use Biological and Mechanical media in all my tanks. on the larger tanks I run usually two large HOB's and a canister...the canister is mostly all biological media with a bit of floss to polish the HOB's are usually the same and I am a fan of the bio-wheel Emperors. Sponge filters are good for fry tanks or grow outs...I could go on and on but I am not..... | |
