| I've never used live plants so i cant help ya. You could use some coconut shells with some holes in them halved of course. I'm sure you could look on aquabid, ebay and find some stuff on there. Here is a link to a place i sometimes use. http://www.kensfish.com/breedingsupplieslinks.html | |

| I've had very mixed results with java moss. Either it grows like a weed and I need to cut it out of places or it goes brown near instantly.
I'm not sure what are good plants for fry to hide in though either. I'm guessing bushy but not delicate would work best.

It turned brown right after I put a new light bulb in. It did great when the old bulb was in there. I've had livebearers, danios and barbs all spawn in tanks with java moss, and had a few fry make it to adulthood by hidin' in the stuff until they were full grown. It can't hurt to try it, JS. Go for it. WYite

| Hrm. You remember what bulb you had Wyite, and what you switched it to? Maybe it's just as simple as the wrong type of light for some of the tanks making it not grow. | |

WYite The Light was most likely too strong. Java moss is a low light plant, your old bulb was probably the right amount of light that the moss needed and when you added the new light it gave off more light than the moss could process and subsequently died.

That was my guess, but it didn't affect my java fern, nor did it improve growth in my anubias. I've kept a java fern in higher watt:gallon ratios before, but that was always when it was shaded by other plants. So I was thinkin' it may have been due to the placement of the moss.
Thanks, Mike.

| I don't think light can be to strong for a plant unless it burns it. But an increase in lighting can cause other plants to uptake more nutrients and starve the moss.
Your changing the bulb was an indirect cause of the demise of the java moss, not a direct cause.
