Repairing the liner will be the easy part. Liner repair kits are available at home improvement stores, or large pet shop chain outlets that sell pond supplies.

Finding the leak:

1) If possible, you can inspect the soil around the pond, wet soil nearby is a dead giveaway.

2)
Allow the water to leak out, until the hole is exposed. Carefully inspect the liner at the water surface each day. Use a towel or rag to wipe algae and scum off of the liner.

3)
You could try dripping heavy cream around the edge of the pond and see if it is draw to the hole, but I found that to be a very messy process.

There's always a risk that the hole is at the very bottom. In that case you'll have to drain the pond.

It has been so hot around here lately that I have been losing about an inch of water every three or four days. My pond is not that deep though.

I thought my pond was leaking earlier this year, it turned out to be my waterfall return flow. I had the flow rate to high, and to close to the edge of the pond. The shallow area of my pond could not handle the heavy return flow and would overflow behind the faterfall. It took me two weeks to figure it out.

Hope this helps ya jsorensen. Best of luck. Ed

thanks 1nevrkwitz it does help the leak isnt at the bottom because it goes to about 1 foot deep and then evaporates and there is a wet pile of dirt at the end of the pond but what i think is happenin is that my pond is on a slope and that is just where it s leaking out but i dont know i will try your techniques and hopefully find the hole

The trick with heavy cream is to put it into a water/soda bottle and then punch a small hole in the cap, much easier to deal with that way. Another way too, is to get some food coloring or a bottle of the special blue pond dye.

Turn off all the filtration too makes it a lot easier to hunt leaks.

Slow leaks suck and are a pain in the nuts to find sometimes. Check all the folds, nooks and crannies too, especially with perfectly square/rectangle ponds. It may be hiding in there.

As far as patching goes, there are all sorts of kits to fix them. Personally, I've used Loctite Plumbers Epoxy plenty of times for patching and putting in drains too. I'm not 100% on the name but it's a big green and white tube and it's cheap and works well.

Other thing is, dry the area your patching completely, and if you make your own patch be sure to cut out a circle. You don't want any corners on the patch to get caught.

All that being said, if it's a cheaper one it may be better to just replace the liner completely especially if you see any areas that are brittle, warped or otherwise not right.
