Salt in a CA tank Empty
PostSubject: Salt in a CA tank   Salt in a CA tank EmptyWed Oct 21, 2009 8:30 pm

I' ve decided I want to try putting salt as a regular step in a couple of my CA tanks, see how it goes. What is the average/recommended dose of salt per gallon I should be looking at? Thinking about JDs, Texas, and Oscars mainly. Thanks

I'm not sure. I don't typically recommend using salt unless treating for an illness. I know that some people do use salt regularly so I will let someone else weigh in. Sorry.

1-2 tsp per gallon wont hurt as long as it is just regular salt....What kind of salt are you speaking of?

I only use salt in treating illness, and that is at 1tbs per 5ish gallons of water for cichlids.

I typically don't use salt except medicinally, either, and then I use 2 tsps non-iodized table salt and 1 tsp of epsom salt per five gallons. Ya could always use marine salt at the same dosage to achieve the same effect, if ya have any on hand.

I've never seen any benefit in putting salt in any SA or CA cichlid tanks. Never seen any harm either, granted, but over time got out of the practice because I didn't see any benefit.

Ok, I'm just going to put in the Green Texas tank, because there is some kind of funny ulcer thingy going on in there. I'm using straight salt, no additives, just plain old NaCl. I put in one teaspoon per gallon and no ill effects, and the sores on the two infected fish seem to be dying/shrinking.

I for one love salt for many different i'llnesses. I recomend aquarium salt for open wounds, sores, hole in the head, and stress. I use one table spoon per 5 gallons with my Stingrays, arowanna, datnoids, clown loaches S.A,C.A and african Cichlinds with no problems over the last 3-4 years. But only when they need it.

you can get salt from any fish, pet store even walmart. comes in a blur carton and is very inexpensideve. follow directions. its a good stress releiver and helps prevent and aid in healing injury. when adding water from evaporation do not add more salt cause it doesnt eveap. when doing water changes thats when you add salt. i have over 30 cichlid tanks going and use salt in every tank even fry tanks. also if you have feeder tanks going double salt recomended. feeders tend to carry lots of disease and the salt also treats them.

my opinion. good luck
