Okay, my two cents, LOL.

IME, if I was doin' regular water changes and had good filtration otherwise, I really didn't see the difference except with very messy eaters. I had two Magnum 350s, (now one, 'cuz I can't find the canister for the second) and ended up converting them to bio media.

The water in this neck of the woods is generally clear anyways. The results may be more noticeable in a region that has higher turbidities.

Agreed.

Either for messy eaters or if you're super lazy I suppose you could use them for cleaning up fresh from the store gravel.

Do you have a problem with diatoms in your tank?

If so and the tank is fairly new...diatoms are common and will generally disappear from sight after a couple of months. If you don't have a problem with diatoms I wouldn't recommend spending the money for the filter.

My 125 is filtered by a 55gal custom made sump. Also have 3 Hydor Korlia pumps in the tank. Only reason I know the tank is full is the fish are alive. My water is crystal clear.

Diatom filters are a PITA IMO.

nice. thats pretty much the common thread about them from everyone i talk to. its a great idea i think but the last thing i need is one more piece of equipmentto go bad and make my maintainence harder.
