My new Bowfin, is pouting i think. Before catching this guy, i had read lots of articles that kind of put this guy in the same catagory as other large predatory coldwater fishes, and the attack and actual fight envolved when i caught him seemed to indicate that this was true. Now that he is in my tank however he seems a lot less so. He always kinda hides out, which i guess, is part of his ambush predator method of operation thing, but yesterday, i went to a local lake, and scooped up about a hundred Gambusia, which i put in his tank, and he simply ignores them. (I only did this because he was showing no interest in pellets) I know newly caught Natives are reluctant to eat for awhile, but i wanted this guy to attack immediately, anything i put in there with him. Oh well, he will eat when he feels like it.

Wow! Bowfin are some serious predators. I'm guessing the fish is stressed from being in captivity. Like MC said when he starts eating watch out. Keep your fingers out of the way too Wink

Is there some cover in the tank?

Depending on it's size, you may need to try some crickets or insects and drop them on the water.

The when the snakehead was little it used to love them. It never ever ate pellets of any kind, but would take fresh meat. Chicken and shrimp were very popular. I never did beef or anything along those lines to keep the water clean.

He has only been in the tank about a week, doesnt seem stressed and may be eating at nite. I put in about a hundred Gambusia, caught from a local lake, that stocks them. so he has plenty of live food available, One of My NANFA buddies, One of their resident "Experts in Ancient Fishes" Smile said they have been known to survive a loooong time without any food at all when forgotten in a tank, so im not overly concerned.
