| The picture is not the best but I would say you do have a male and a female. In the first pic #16 I think the female is the top one and male is the bottom one. | |

| Thats actually what I had thought as well the bottom one in that pic is actually about 2 in bigger than the top one but the one thing that made me unsure is the black dot in the middle of both thier bodies and by the tail I had read that those dots were indicative of male jds and they both have them I will try and get clearer pics but they are very hard to catch they are quite skittish and very fast but tyvm for your help | |

| How big are they normally before they will begin to spawn? they are about 6 inches and they are practically inseperable you rarly see one without the other immidiately next to it. They seem very mellow and dont go after any of the other fish in the tank honestly the complete opposite of what I was told to expect with JDS but im certainly not complaining they are awesome fish | |

| I also think ya may have a male and a female. At 6" they're big enough to spawn, I've had females that spawned as small as 3". Does the bottom fish in the pic of both of 'em have a red or orange edge on the dorsal and anal fins? Male JDs often exhibit such. I can't tell if it has a reddish/orange edge or if it's an artifact of the photo, or just my eyes playing tricks on me.

| They actually both have orange and yellow in thier anal fins and it looks like bright yellow developing around thier faces and dorsal fins when I just went to feed them it seems like today they are alot more colorful than they were yesterday I will attempt to take more pics and post em once I get the kids off to school | |

| I have seen the orange and yellow markings on both male and female anal/dorsal fins. I'm basing my guess on the gill plate markings. The males tend to have all round markings on the lower gill plates and around/under the eye while females are more blotchy. Which is what I'm seeing in your pair. Typically the male will have more pronounced spangling on the upper part of their body than the females as well. Which I think I am also seeing that in the pics.
They are definitely large enough to breed. I find the biggest factor on whether fish will breed or not is the tank conditions. Water changes are your friend. The cleaner your water is the more apt they will be to spawn. Sometimes the change in water temp during a water change will trigger them as well. Tank size will play a part as well. What size tank are they in? | |

| I just read in your other thread that you have a 125gal for the JDs. That is plenty of room. However one of two things may occur due to the other fish in the tank. The fish may not spawn because of additional stresses from the other fish present in the tank...or when they ultimately do spawn they will become much more aggressive toward the other inhabitants of the tank. | |

| The gill plate markings is what I'm guessin' on as well.
Never seen a red edge on th dorsal of a female, and not on all males. Have always thought that was primarily a male trait. Was lookin' for that as confirmation on the sex.

| They are in a 125 gal and I have the temp set between 78 & 82 currently. Ive bern vacuuming out the tank every 3 days or so (i have a 12 in pleco who defecates more than any fish ive ever witnessed) which usually results in about a 25% water change twice a week, my bf says I do it too much but I like to keep the tanks clean and I hate stinky aquarium water. Ive read about the aggression factor I have several flower pots set up for caves and a couple big flat rocks in the tank as well. They so far have never shown any signs of stress or aggression due to the other fish. I also just bought a bunch of plants both fake and a few bulbs as ive noticed they seem alot less skittish the more places they have to hide. Do you have any suggestions in anything more I could do to encourage them to spawn? They are so cute together they are almost always right by each others side. At times they chase each other but it doesnt seem to be aggressivly and I often find them in the biggest flower pot together. | |

| As long as the water is clean they will spawn when they feel like it and when you least expect it | |
