The odd couple. Empty
PostSubject: The odd couple.   The odd couple. EmptyTue Dec 30, 2008 12:24 am

A few days ago, I had one of my pond tubs leak where the plumbing comes in. After checking it out, I realized I couldn't do anything with it unless I drained it.

In the tub were 4 12 to 14 inch pacu. Originally I was just going to move them in one of those rubbermaid storage tubs, fix the plumbing and move them back in. Everything connects into one 3ish inch screw hole on the side and they come with an adapter. I got the pacu moved and the tub emptied to find out the adapter was sort of falling apart, so it was going to need to reseal it some other way and it was going to take far more time than I expected. Yay for plumbers putty, not yay for how long it takes to set.

I didn't want to leave these guys in 18 gallon totes for a few days, so I decided to test them out in the bigger indoor koi pond to see what they would do.

Since the pacu have been here they never get feeders. They're fed algae wafers, peas and koi pellets. I wouldn't try it with pacu that have been on feeders recently even as a treat.

Anyway, I got them moved in, and fed everyone and they all seemed to be getting along just fine. I did make one mistake however. I had forgotten that there was one large fantail goldfish in there, and later on that evening when I went to feed them again I had noticed they were nipping at that one's fins, but everyone else was perfectly fine.

So I pulled the fantail into another tank, and so far, 5 days later, everyone has been doing just fine. No nips, no injuries, and there are even a few long tail comets in there. Their old tub is ready and waiting empty but it seems that the faster goldfish, so long as they're near the same size get along just fine with em.

Well the Pacu are still small enough I guess. Beware though and hopefully you get the other up and running again soon!

I'm not sure what's going to happen really. I noticed last night there's some small koi fry in the pond as well, and they're still there today. This is my first time keeping pacu, but I have read that people have had good luck keeping them with so koi long as the water temp stays above 70ish.

What I think is it's going to come down to the growth curve on the koi and the pacu. If they both keep to the same size, I think they should be fine. However if the pacu start seriously outgrowing the koi, then there may be trouble.

I can't find anything solid on the combination besides some people saying it's worked for them. We'll see. Maybe I'll end up being one of those internet people too. Smile
