5-10 gallon tank, with 5-6" of water, 1-2 tsps of salt per gallon and a temp of 75-78°. Fine gravel substrate, plenty of plants (plastic or live), but if ya have any java moss I'd stick some in there. If the male gets too aggressive, separate 'em with a divider for a few days. The female has the spot on the dorsal, BTW, I'm assuming you knew that already. Male usually fans the eggs until they hatch (variable, but generally 'bout a week) and for a day or two afterwards. I always have removed the female as soon as he starts harrassing her and chasing her away from the spawn. I remove the father when the fry are scrounging around on their own, usually 2-3 days after hatching. They need small food. They will eat newly hatched brine shrimp, microworms and very finely powdered, high-quality dry food. If ya can get an infusoria culture goin' that is probaly the best option, IMO. As they grow, the fry are cannibalistic toward smaller brethren. Algae in the tank improves both growth and survival rate. Coupla notes: If the female thins and the male does not seem to be guarding spawn, check the plants for eggs, especially near the top of the tank. They will spawn in a more killifish-type fashion, especially in tall tanks. This appears to be adaptive to habitat conditions to provide the greatest chance of survival for the fry. They'll spawn pit-fashion in shallower tanks almost every time, but survival rate seems to be related to the ease in which the fry can reach the surface and fill the swim bladder (thus the hi-lo variability in spawning methods). The first time I spawned 'em I didn't know this and had a poor survival rate. The second and subsequent times I dropped the level in the tank to 'bout half and the survival rate improved incredibly. Incidentally, flagfish were initially thought to be a dwarf cichlid because of their behavior. They're one of only two species of killifish I've kept and the only one I've spawned. The reason I asked if ya spawned 'em was 'cuz IME the only time a male and female would hang out regularly is if they were compatible. Usually the females would hide out from the male until they were ready. WYite

| Thanks a lot for all the info WYite! I have been wanting to get a 10 gallon planted tank going for a while now. I think Ill dust of the 10 gallon and head out this weekend and grab a some sand and a few plants. Transfer some water from the 30 there in now and let nature take care of the rest.
Quick queston WYite: When its time to remove the adults, will all be well in the 30 gallon community tank or will they be aggresive? The tank mates are neons, blind cave fish, fiddler crabs, african dwarf frog, danios, corys and a couple of upside down cats.
And one more: Do you think a simple airpump driven corner spongs would be enough for the tank?

| Thanks Lady G! I love that frog. We named him Gorf. I love watching the little hog eat. I picked up a friend for him about 2 months ago and she will be enjoying his company in about 2 more months. Im not planning on breeding them, just give him a friend. | |

No problem. Good luck, and ask if ya have any other questions. I'll help if I can. - 1nevrkwitz wrote:

Shouldn't be a problem at all. - 1nevrkwitz wrote:

Do you think a simple airpump driven corner spongs would be enough for the tank? Yup. I love sponge filters and use them quite a bit for smaller tanks, especially lightly stocked, planted tanks and fry tanks. WYite

| How is the Leporinus?
I had three here that were almost a foot long over the summer, and were told by the person who dropped them off that they were pure evil. Apparently killed off everything else in his tank except his electric catfish in a single weekend while he was away.
I thought they were pretty and was tempted by them, but didn't have anywhere they could live long term.

| A friend of mine now has the Leporinus. He started to get real aggresive towards all his tankmates. He was ambushing the Os, JD and Cat. He would lay low behind the rocks and attack thier underside or tailfins. If the others would hide he would flush them from there pots or caves and use them teeth to punish them for simply existing.
He is now with two other Leps in a bare bottom tank and is doing great. Hes got an inch or so on the other two Leps and now is leader of the pack. Everything that I've read about the Leps says to give them plenty of hiding spots, a good diet of veggies and fruits and they will blend good with most fish thier size. That was not the case with this Lep. IMO they do best when kept with thier own kind.
When I got him he was beat up real bad. No tailfin to speak of and pretty much stayed in a flower pot unless he was feeding. As soon as he got healthy he decided that the tank was his. He attacked every tankmate except the ACF.
The Lep (Bandit is what I named him) is a really neat fish and I miss him, but he and his old tankmates are all a lot happier now.

| Good to know Nev. Maybe one day I'll set up a tank just for plants and toss in two or three. Did they dig at all? | |

| No digging. But he would bite good size chunks off the leaves and stems of all the plants. He really loved zucchini and lettuce. | |
