Well the Blue Acaras I got 20 days ago ended up being male and female, which is what I was hoping for. For the last several days I noticed their vent tubes out and both were in great colors, I thought they might start breeding. Well I was right I noticed the male guarding a pit they dug out the other day. There are wigglers, I didn't even notice eggs. I am so siked. They actually bred in the 20g, I was going to move them to the 55g as soon as things got better in there.

Here they are when I got them they are stunning right now in breeding color.

UPDATE: They have been free swimming for a couple days now....here is a couple of pics. There is about 50-75 free swimming...I could only get a few as the others are to the left behind the plants and in the pits they dug.

Cool, nice pics. I'm gonna have to get me a good camera. By the time they grow out, I may just have a tank or two running, as well...

The male is doing a good job of protecting them....I am afraid of one of them eating the babies, I am hoping they dont....I think they are getting ready to spawn again though as they have been flirting and they're vent tubes are out again!

I've found that the best way to keep the fry are in a separate tank. Even if the parents don't eat them they tend to only last a couple of weeks at the most because it is tough to keep them fed the way they need to be fed. Maybe you will have better luck with them in the main tank than I did.

What do you suggest moving the parents or the fry? How to move the fry...not exactly a professional on breeding these guys.

I would move the fry. You can keep them in fairly small quarters...say a 20L or something similar for quite some time depending on how many you have. I find the best way to take the fry out of the tank is to suck them up into a bucket with a gravel vac syphon. Some people will also use a turkey baster but I've never tried that.

Keep an eye on the fry and occasionally you will see some that need to be culled (you'll know what they look and act like after a while). They should be fed 3 to 4 times a day. I just use crushed flake and growth pellets. Some people also like to use BBS. Change the water out as often as you can. I start off doing daily water changes of about 25% and eventually after a couple months cut it back to every other day 25% changes.

:agre2: I used a grav vac to move my con fry. I think I had 100% success rate with them too.

I do the same with platys. Gravel vac to pluck the fry into a bare bottom tank with a spong filter an a few flooting fake plants. Congrats, and goodluck!

Definitely move the fry. A heavy plastic bag that won't fold back on itself, like some of the heavier ziplocks, shaped and hot glued to an old net frame, works well for fry once their siphoned out of the main tank, and for stragglers that seem to avoid the siphon. How many of these babies are ya lookin to raise to a tradeable size? If you're goin' for all of 'em, then you'll need a 55 with every other day water changes to maximize growth. Otherwise, a twenty if you're only lookin' to end up with 6-12 of the best and healthiest. I've used 10 gallon tanks for growout but ya have to be ready to cull regularly to keep 'em growin' well, and then ya risk the chance of cullin' some potentially nice lookin' fish. Cull for shape as well as size, or ya might end up with a lot of excess males, LOL, and cull any with obvious health problems. Your jag should be well fed for a while.

Edit: Guess I shoulda read closer, Ddawg already covered most of this, LOL.

Well I moved them to a ~6g rubbermaid tank with heater and filter. I think I got about 30 of them...Most will become food, some I may grow out. Got as many as I could see....only about five or six did not survive.
