Origin:
South America, Amazon Basin

Family:
Osteoglossidae

Species Type: Bony-tongues

Maximum Size:
36-48'', 90-120 cm

Life Span:
10-15 yrs

Natural Habitat:
Amazon River Basin

Diet: shrimp, frogs, krill, pellets.

Temperature: 75°-86° F (24°-30° C)

PH: 6.0 to 7.0

Minimum Tank Size: 250-500 gallons or bigger. Depth less important than length or width, a depth of 24" is adequate.

Tank Region:
top dweller

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive predator

Possible Tank Mates:
Anything big enough not to be eaten...examples include pacus, red tail catfish, large shovelnose catfish and large cichlids.

Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooders. The male incubates the eggs and young for approximately sixty days. The fry remain with the parents until they are approximately three inches.
