Im at a loss here with the duel identification on some alonocara peacock hybrids (....pictures are imminent) althou maybe a theoretical discussion here would benefit this topic and ease the questions that are sure to arise in the identification of these hybrid cichlids ...now for a little back ground . at 5 inches it was time to trade in and trade up i had a mating pair of pink peacock hybrids one male one female i had already found 25 day old fry in my ninety and quickly removed the fry but due to the fact that there were what appeared to be three different breeds here i was at a loss,,,, i had ob. peacock ..pink peacock and a odd lateral stripped grey cichlid with a bright red dorsal top line . i left it unknown and questioned and raised the fry to one inch watching them carefully for identifying markings and now i have some (well rather pleased to say BADASS young fry ) . as i removed the bagged cichlids at a local pet shop and aquatic store near my house from the box i carried them inside in and helped the shop owner transfer the cichlids in to pre selected tank i only just caught what looked like more fry shoot from the mouth of the female pink peacock . young oscars got one or two but we managed to save most.....once again it had THREE of the same type of young fry the pinks ...the o.b.s and the same odd red lined grey cichlid the second set in a month!

the pinks are now juvies and starting to color...... the o.b.s are blue and black and orange and gorgeous........the unknown in question is changing for the better ....... the red line on top has turned a wasp yellow the grey is blue the anal fins are showing egg spots of bright yellow and the rear fin is specked with col-bolt blue specks ( once again pics are forth coming ) a fantastic cichlid hybrid that has captured my heart yet leaves me wondering what the cross is ??? maybe you've seen it maybe you've had it ' maybe you cant help me but i hope if nothing else you will enjoy the pictures posted here ......mbunaboy

Hard to tell what the father was. From the relatively plain shape of the fins and the shape of the head and mouth I'd guess a mbuna. Do ya have any blue mbuna in the same tank?

Tryin' to guess the parentage of hybrids is difficult at best. Too many variables in the genetics, such as the probability that a given trait will appear and uncertainty as to which traits will be dominant or recessive. I wouldn't have guessed any peacock heritage if ya hadn't have mentioned that a female peacock had spit them.

    Sharp lookin' fish!
