PostSubject: Some different fish.   Some different fish. EmptyFri Feb 06, 2009 1:11 am

I adopted out a bunch of fish today and I currently have a 55 free and a 30 free.

I was thinking of saving off one of them to grow plants in more regularly. Mike D has given me the plant bug or something. Damn him. Wink Anyway, I'd like to get some fishies to go in with the plants, but I'm pretty meh on any more cichlids. Never mind their love of plant destruction.

I'm looking for a few suggestions. What I'd really like to get would eventually outgrow either of those tanks. Myxocyprinus asiaticus can get up to 20" so that wouldn't really work.

I was thinking I may be able to get away with 2 or 3 Leporinus but have seen some sites claim the max out at 8 and others that say their max is 14.

I'm running to Big Al's tomorrow as it is, since my only can of krill left smells bad, and it's cheaper than express shipping one here.

I say for the 30..planted BETTA all the way!! You could get a sorority of fm or get just one male and some other fishes that may be ok with him. The only other fish I personally have any experience with M bettas are cories and they did well. But they are so under rated and such great fish to watch the bettas have such WONDERFUL personalities!!!

Hrm. I didn't think of bettas. Can a single male betta be kept with a group of females or is it like the gourami where the male will eventually beat the snot out of the them?

A betta and neon tetras would look nice in the 30.

I like the idea of a male betta and a group of small schooling fish...or even 2 schools. I like the harlequins myself and I'd go with cardinal tetras over the neons. In the 55 I would look into a nice school of rainbows. I'm thinking of getting some in the near future.

I encourage you to look into Killifish for the planted 30 gallon. Thier bright colors, interesting personality, and care requirements make them a good choice IMO.
One of my favorites is Clown Killifish (Pseudepiplatys annulatus) a really beautiful fish. Breeding them would be fun and interesting as well.

As far as the planted 55 mabey some Angel Fish, Silver Dollars, a herd of Corydoras catfish, Rams, and a male and a few female Swords.

Hmm a nice community of Black Neon tetras and two or three Leaf fish along with a few upside down catfish (synodontis?) would be a nice little 30g community....

The 55g well I would stock it with Cichlids.....you know me! Definitely 5-6 Australlian rainbows....nine or ten hatchet fish, some bottom dwellers maybe a school of corys, and maybe a couple of centerpiece fish like a couple gourami (maybe a chocolate and a powder blue)

After today, I may concede to the cichlids. Going to Big Al's was good for me. All I ever see is sick and beat up animals for the most part and seeing big nice well cared for guys was really awesome. Good for the soul.

Anyway, the 30 is covered, and I'll get to that in a separate post, and I was offered a small handful of Venustus fry to grow out in the 55. I need to figure out where exactly they'd go after the grow out of the 55, but I'm very tempted. Not sure how much they would leave the plants alone however.
