I've been staring at these beauties in my LFS for a couple months now, nobody else seems to want them. What would the minimum sized tank be for Pipa? And is 80 bucks a peice a good price?

I've got an extra 29 gallon sitting around and I know these frogs can get like 6-8 inches...

I would say you might be able to get one or two in a 29g just from doing some reading of my own. A larger tank is better. Looks like an interesting species though. I don't personally have any experience with them and can't really help you out as far as if $80 is a good price. I did see that they need a lot of filtration and enjoy a meaty diet....that is all I have

It's a rather large, fully aquatic toad. I would hope to get 2, 1 male and 1 female so I could see their breeding behavior (they lay eggs on their backs and absorb them into small honeycomb patterns).

This summer I plan to turn my 33 gallon pond into an endler breeding pond so I would have plenty of food for them. The problem is the price, since I also plan to set up a high tech planted tank over the summer which will cost about a grand...

Oh, and what would be better, a 36 inch 29 gallon (acrylic) or a 30 inch 29 gallon (glass)? the 3' one is less deep and less wide, I think 10" wide.

Do they say which Pipa type they are? I know there's Pipa Pipa and Pipa carvalhoi.

Carvalhoi is a dwarf and doesn't hit the 6 inch mark.

I've had one regular Pipa pipa here for a short time. I had the guy in a 29 and I'm pretty sure I had a Rena XP3 on his tank and it got along fine. He's was messy and I was either lazy or overly busy at the time. (I'm going to guess lazy though.)

Keeping two in a 29 could be doable, but it's one of those things you'd just have to keep an eye on when they get larger. The one here wasn't super active, except when he was eating, but he ate a metric ton, and pooped about the same. (Thus the xp3)

For price, depending on where you live, $80 per may be high. I just checked kingsnake quickly and there was someone selling them on there for $35 per. The question then is $70 plus shipping cheaper than the 160 your store wants. Is the ones they have adults, or can you figure out sex from the ones in the store too, since you want to breed em.

If they've been there a long time you could ask if the store would discount them some for you too. They may be happy to get 'em out.

They have a sale coming up (35% off everything) plus my discount for being an aquarium society member would make them maybe 45 bucks each, but that's if I can get the tank up in time.

And then I have to convince my parents to let me get them. They like me to have as much information as possible before they consider it. It drives me crazy, I had to do it when I wanted the new sulawesi snails and by the time I gathered everything I could find and they okayed it, all the snails have left the market and I doubt I'll see any for at least a year or two. :angspmd:

Your parents are actually doing you a favor by making you do your research before you purchase pets.

Speaking as someone that does fish/reptile rescue and at times takes in animals that I have no clue what they are because of it, I wish more people researched what it is they bought on a regular basis.

However I also can see it being sort of excessive with something like snails. With a proven level of experience there should be some kind of trust that your not going to do something completely insane. All your tanks look very well put together and thought out.

Also they're snails. They get out of hand put in your loach for a few days.

Lol, not when they're five bucks each. They'd be up on aquabid before I fed the to my loaches.

I usually do alot of research before I purchase fish (I'll admit, I'm victim to a few impulse buys) but they want me to write them out like 3 pages of information on them and then it takes them 3 or 4 weeks to get around to reading and another 2 to come to a decision.

Everyone is a victim to a few impulse buys, it's sometimes very very hard to resist temptation on some stuff.

Just sounds like you need a more efficient system of approvals there. Or get an approved list of certain types, so you have coverage. Like snails for "live food"

Lol, yeah I like that idea. Except I think they'd wonder when my biggest fish is 2 inches and I buy a 5 inch "feeder" frog.
