Ok, so I put this over at AC also, but I need a new camera. Can anyone give me some advice on what to get? I can't spend much I really need to keep it at 200.00 or under if possible. I want to be able to get some good shots of my fish and my kids of course, is it possible for that price?

It is but what you need to look at is the pixwls,
8 - 10 pixels take really nice shots,
the better the pixels the better the pictures, and way better macro shots.

Not exactly. Macro ability is totally dependent on the lens. Megapixels is only going to matter if you want to print them and at what size.

I still use my oldie old old Digital SLR (from '98 - 99) for events and travel (since it takes AAs and not weird rechargeables) and I get fantastic shots that can be printed up huge with no prob.

I'm guessing you want something that's digital and a point and shoot? As in, everything is all one piece?

The big thing you're going to have trouble with is finding one camera that does both well. For $200 you can get a camera that will take good pictures of your kids. It will more than likely only take fair to meh pictures of fish, unless the fish are fairly large.

I would stick with the known camera brands. My preference is with Nikon but it's a bit different with SLR gear. I'm sure Canon, Olympus and Pentax all have decent models in your price range.

If you can hold off a few weeks and save up an additional $100 I'd highly recommend the Nikon Coolpix L100. It's due out the end of March. For that price range the specs look fantastic and so far the reviews are looking very promising as well. It seems like it should be able to cover both of what you're trying to do. The only down side for you is it's $279.

Another option would be to browse the used section at B&H. I've gotten some fantastic deals from there. Also, be careful of ordering online (and most mall camera stores too) Online I have only ever ordered camera gear from Amazon and B&H. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com), but as far as anywhere else, I wouldn't. There are a disturbingly high number of scammy and rip-off camera sites out there.

Overall things to look for in any camera:
Optical Zoom:
If the camera you get comes with digital zoom, turn it off, your pictures will thank you.

F number:
If you see something listed as an F number like F3.5 or F2.8, you want the lowest number you can find/afford. The lower the number the better the lens/camera will work in low light.

Megapixel:
As far as megapixel goes what's your end result? Are you going to just put them online? Do you want to make big prints of them? Having a higher megapixel camera is good, but it also depends on storage and drive space and a number of other factors as well.

My very old SLR (Fuji S1) is a 6 megapixel camera. At it's medium high setting (jpg 4200x3800ish) the files are on average 5 megabytes and default at a print size of around 22 by 17 inches. On a new 10MP camera, that's more than likely the low setting now.

There's a lot to look at and a lot to consider. I know nothing about these style cameras but there's lots of reviews out there. Just a matter of looking around.

I'd suggest a Nikon L50 cam thats what I ahve and I love it.

I have nothing but I would side with saint as he has some nice looking pics. Also B&H is a very good company to deal with.

kodak has a lot of digitals under 200. Kodac I suggest that what ever you find look for it @ Overstock.com I have used them 4 times and have always found what I was looking for cheeper than anywere else. Circut city is going out of business as well so I'd check there too overstock.com

I agree with Saint. The lens has everything to do with the picture quality.
I also use Nikon cameras and the coolpix is a good quality camera. I have an older one that I use and I like it. I wan't to get a DSLR but that will be once I save up the funds.

Dunno what kinda funds your looking at DD, but I just picked up a Fuji S2 Pro DSLR for the wifey used at B&H for $300ish. They got 'em listed on their website too. It's an older model but it's far more bad ass than some of the newer Nikon SLR's out now. I wouldn't even look at the D40 or 80 right now. They've pulled the motor from a number of the cheaper cameras so you're stuck using the cruddier G and DX series lenses.

I'm picky though. So you may be okay with that.

If you do look at the used stuff at b&h though, I find that so long as you stick with 9 or above for their used ratings, you won't be disappointed. I've had a few 8s from them that were a bit more beat than I was comfortable with. That being said. they've never once given me crap about returns either.

I don't care for Kodak all that much. I find the color to be a touch off, mostly too vivid. That camera is another one that would be great for kid photography, but not so much fish I think.

The Canon SX110 is my one friends daily carry, and he likes it. He takes mostly city shots though, not much of anything macro. I was looking at the specs on it, and the macro functionality isn't mentioned much, but I could beat on it some next time I see him.

My other friend uses the step up from the Fuji model you picked, the Fuji S100FS (I think) and loves it. He actually has an add on lens adapter that works as a macro. I'd have to look into what the differences is between the FD and the FS since it is a couple hundred bucks price jump but I've know I've always been pretty happy with Fuji bodies for their slr stuff.

I had a kodak before (power shot I think) it came with a printer dock. Anyway, it was ok.

I think I like the Canons and plan on looking into them a bit more.
