PostSubject: A New Fish   A New Fish EmptyFri Oct 09, 2009 10:14 pm

Can anyone tell me what type of fish this is? I'm pretty sure it's an african cichlid but not sure exactly what type. It is very small right now approx 1" but I'm assuming it will get quite a bit bigger.

Not a Maylandia lombardoi they are blue at that size...looks more like a saulosi. Possible very low grade Labidochromis caeruleus (electric yellow).

Possibly a female saulosi. I'd guess P. tropheops. Think the eye's too big to be an electric yellow.

It does look a lot like an electric yellow minus the black bar on the dorsal and anal fins. Like detroit said it may have been bred that way. It was marked in the store with a made up name which tells me it may be a hybrid or something.

Could be a hybrid electric yellow. It may be the angle of the pic, but the eye looks too big for the size of the head, the snout looks to be not pointed enough and the angle of the mouth appears wrong. The faint lateral markings along the back aren't generally characteristic of L. caeruleus either. Try Googling Pseudotropheus tropheops "chilumba" or Tropheops sp. "chilumba".

Look at the young females in the 8th and 9th pics. Seen a few pics of 'em with white anal fins as well.

Sorry, not tryin' to be stubborn or argumentative, just don't look like an electric yellow to me at that angle. Smile

It could be Wyite.

I'm pretty sure this is what it is, Labidochromis caeruleus (Lion's Cove I). After searching for the tropheops I found the fish above and Lion's cove is what it said on the tank. There were probably 60 fish in the tank I got this one from and they were all the same color and I'm assuming not all female. They are still pretty much fry and may even be slightly under 1" now that I look again. I'm wondering if more color will come out as it gets older. Here's the link to what I found.

I may have to wait till it gets a bit bigger before I really know what it is.

Well, this is why it is a discussion board....I can see your arguement wyite but I am not seeing the shorter body and curved snout like you are....the eye does look a bit bigger but at the same time it is really not as big as a typical juvi Tropheops....I still say it is a caeruleus or a hybrid maybe of an albino caeruleus. The tail fin has hints of blue and the anal fin is light, also from the pic it looks like the snout is pointed too much too me. If it is a Lab, it is very low grade and possible hybrid....give us a pic in a month or so, time will tell for sure!

So after a week in some really clean water and plenty of food...I looked today and the little guy is showing signs of a black bar on the dorsal fin. Definitely an electric yellow.
