Hi all I was wondering what kind of water do you guys use for your fresh water tanks? Do you use tap water and add conditioner or do you guys use r/o(reverse osmosis) water?

Should I add anything else to it other than that?

No, just water conditioner is fine. I use to add fertilizer for aquariums when I had more plants, but I haven't done that in a long time, since I only have a small bit of Java fern left.

I use tap water and conditioner. I used to have well water so no conditioner was necessary. Now the question you asked "do I need to add anything else" this question is too broad to ask really. But the question I have is why did you ask? Are you trying to achieve a certain chemistry? Is your water hard or soft? You may benefit from adding things to your water but it depends on what your tap water readings are and what you are trying to achieve.

With your tanks, being they are cycling...which I got from previous threads, you don't want to add anything except to help with ammonia and nitrite. A good conditioner like Prime can help you out, as well as ammo lock.

I use tap water without conditioner because it comes from a well.

RO water is reverse osmosis water. Essentially highly filtered water.

I have no conditioner so I add my water slowly. Works for me and my fish. Smile

What process do you use exactly? Tap water with chlorine and or chloramines can be toxic to beneficial bacteria and fish. Most treatment plants have gone to using chloramines which contain ammonia and chlorine. Anyway the point is Chloramines are much harder to get rid of and gas off than chlorine.

I have all african cichlids from tanganyika. I use only tap water and no chemicals unless last resort for life. I use salt 1 teaspoon per 7 gallons.

Unless it's extremely unwell, or very delicate, the tap water around here is just fine.

Daily water changes and use Prime afterword to neutralize ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. I would also get a bottle of ammo-lock for the ammonia as I have mentioned a couple of times already. If your ammonia and nitrite levels are up start doing more water changes till they are 0 or close to 0.

I agree with MC. You need to get your ammonia and nitrite levels down to 0 or close to 0.

That's good your tank is doing as it should, just keep doing the water changes as mentioned.
