African Knifefish Empty
PostSubject: African Knifefish   African Knifefish EmptySat Jun 06, 2009 3:51 pm

So I have my 55 setup with a juvie African Knifefish, Rubberlip Pleco and a cana snail. I am thinking of taking this tank down to reduce me to the 125 and 5. Considering Mr. Knifefish shouldn't be kept in the 55 long term I am debating on putting him in the 125 or finding him a new home. I guess my question is, is he going to go psycho on the current fishies of the 125 if I put him in there, or will he keep to himself. I had tried to put some rams in with him and they all disappeared, but they did so rather quickly after purchasing so it could have just been a bad batch. The current inhabitants of the 125 are quite varied(due to my fiancee) and include, guppies(dont care if they get eaten), tetras, loaches, catfish, and an angel. What do ya'll think? I am guessing he will eat what can fit in his mouth, which at this point isn't alot, but I'm not sure if he will attack the ones too big to snack on.

I dont think you are going to have an attack fish on your hands. I think it may be ok with what you have may mess with the angel. Being a carnivore and a predator it will eat anything it can get it's hands on....It is also nocternal and may do it's hunting at night.

Your rams were unfortunately a snack for your knife. Like MC said they are nocternal and they hunt from sunset into the night. They will feed on anything that will fit into there mouths. Is he a brown or a black knife? Blacks tend to be more aggressive than browns. In the long run IMO I think you will have a 125g with a african knife.

He is a brown. The rams were pretty large. That's the only reason I doubted he was the reason for their demise. I never did find a body but with that cana snail in there, I never do.

I'd say odds are good the knife had a tasty ram snack too.

My concern with the angel is more that the knife is going to chase it into something and injure it. I had a pretty beefy angel in with some small arowanas. Once they got big enough they chased the angel into the filter and gave it a nice scrape on it's side.
